The Safety Keynote Speaker Who Died on the Job and Came Back
On July 28, 1992, a workplace accident sent 8,000 volts through Danny Bader's body. He was clinically dead for approximately six minutes. His friend and colleague Bruce didn't make it home. Danny's safety keynote turns that day into the one thing no checklist can deliver: a workforce that's mentally present, not just physically compliant.
“Perfect — had everyone in the room!”
“Phenomenal keynote. Top notch.”
Danny Bader brings the safety message to frontline crews and executive teams alike - trusted by organizations where going home safe is the standard.
THE SAFETY STORY NO OTHER SPEAKER CAN TELL
It was the end of the day. Danny and his friend Bruce were lowering a metal ladder off a roofing job, both men on the ground, both already thinking about where they were going next. The ladder contacted an 8,000-volt power line. Bruce died. Danny's heart stopped too. Bruce's brother Stu came down off the roof and gave CPR to both of them. Only Danny came back.
That accident had two causes, and every safety leader will recognize both. The physical conditions: energized lines close to the work. And the mental conditions: end-of-day distraction, a routine task, autopilot. Danny's keynote is built on the truth that the second set of conditions is the one your program probably isn't reaching.
What Danny built from that day — over 30 years of speaking, six books, and work with hundreds of organizations — is a safety keynote unlike anything else on the mainstage: a firsthand account of a preventable workplace fatality, delivered by its survivor, connected to a practical framework your people can use the moment they walk back onto the site.
Audiences leave asking one question differently: What will I do today to protect life, mine or someone else's?
SAFETY KEYNOTE TOPIC
Back To Life: A Safety Mindset for Every Moment
We often think of safety as a checklist: rules, regulations, procedures. But at its core, safety is about something far more sacred: protecting life, yours and the lives of others.
In this powerful and deeply personal session, Danny Bader shares the story of the day he was electrocuted and died before being brought back to life. That moment changed everything. It gave him a profound reverence for life and a new lens through which to view risk, awareness, and the human spirit.
This isn't just a story. It's a call to remember why safety matters. Not because a manual said so, but because behind every policy, every protocol, and every PPE requirement is a person who wants to go home at the end of the day. A child who wants their parent to walk in the door. A team that wants to work hard but live harder.
When Danny asks crews what distracts them most on the job, nobody says the machinery. They say life: the things they've got to do, the relationships they're struggling with, the bills they need to pay. That's why this keynote goes where compliance training can't. Protocol manages the physical conditions of an accident. Only a person whose head is clear can manage the mental ones.
The keynote runs 45–60 minutes and is customized for every audience. Half-day and full-day workshop formats are available, along with virtual delivery.
THE TWO HALVES OF SAFETY (replaces "The Three Levels" section)
Every real safety culture stands on two legs, and most programs only build one.
Protocol: The visible half. Checklists, distances, PPE, procedures. Back the trucks in when you arrive on site so you can get out quick. Wear the harness on the roof. Non-negotiable, and not enough on its own.
Presence: The invisible half. A safety mindset that says: my body is here right now. I'm here physically. I need to be here mentally. This is the half that was missing for Danny and Bruce at the end of that day in 1992, and it's the half this keynote builds.
The Back to Life Blueprint® — Applied to Safety
Presence can't be commanded. It has to be built, and Danny's Back to Life Blueprint® gives crews five principles that keep them grounded on the job and beyond:
Develop Vision — A crew member with a vision for their life has a reason to be present for it.
Know Thyself — Honest self-awareness about what's pulling your attention before it pulls it on the site.
Be Still — Clarity in the chaos. Attention is a trained skill, not a personality trait.
Seek and Be Support — The crews that talk to each other about life are the crews that watch each other's backs at work.
Evolve — Learn from every near miss, every incident, every day, and communicate it fast.
After spending time with Danny, safety audiences leave with:
A Renewed Sense of Purpose — Reconnection to the why behind safety work, beyond compliance, beyond rules, anchored in the belief that every moment matters and every life has value.
The Power of Presence — How awareness, focus, and presence prevent accidents before they happen. Safety isn't just action. It's attention.
The Human Side of Safety — Behind every stat is a story. Attendees leave with a deeper appreciation for the people they protect, including themselves.
A Framework for Resilience — Five simple, powerful Back to Life principles that equip teams to stay grounded, resilient, and intentional, on the job and beyond.
A Personal Challenge — Each person will be asked: what will you do differently today to protect life, yours or someone else's?
This keynote is ideal for:
Safety leaders and EHS professionals
Field teams and frontline employees
Utilities, construction, energy, trades, and manufacturing organizations
Executive leadership building a strong workplace safety culture
Any organization where "going home safe" isn't just a slogan, it's the standard

Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What makes Danny Bader different from other safety keynote speakers?
Danny was clinically dead for approximately six minutes after a 1992 workplace electrocution that took the life of his colleague Bruce. He is not repeating research or telling someone else's story. He describes the physical and mental conditions of a fatal accident from the inside, then connects them to a practical framework, the Back to Life Blueprint®, developed over 30 years of work with hundreds of organizations.
What does Danny Bader's safety keynote cover?
The keynote, Back To Life: A Safety Mindset for Every Moment, covers the two halves of workplace safety: protocol and presence. Danny shares the story of his accident, shows how distraction and autopilot create the mental conditions for incidents, and gives audiences five principles for staying grounded and present on the job.
Is this keynote appropriate for frontline crews as well as leadership?
Yes. Danny speaks to field teams, frontline employees, and executive leadership, and customizes the message for each. He has deep experience with trades, utilities, construction, pharmaceutical, healthcare, and manufacturing audiences, where his story of a preventable workplace accident carries unique weight.
How long is the safety keynote?
The keynote runs 45 to 60 minutes and is customized for each event. Half-day and full-day workshop formats are available, as well as virtual presentations.
Does Danny address safety compliance or safety culture?
Both, and the difference between them is the heart of his message. Compliance manages the physical conditions of an accident: equipment, distances, procedures. Culture manages the mental conditions: distraction, autopilot, and the life stresses people carry onto the site. Danny's keynote is built to close that second gap.

Meet Danny Bader
I'm Danny Bader — husband, father, author, speaker, and someone who literally came back from the dead to tell you that safety is about something far more sacred than a checklist. I'm one of eight kids from an Irish Catholic family, and for the first 28 years of my life, I lived without any significant challenges, until the day 8,000 volts of electricity changed everything. My friend Bruce and I were working on a roofing job when we lowered a metal ladder into a power line. We both died that day. Only I came back.
I've spent more than 30 years since then speaking to thousands of people, from electrical contractors to billion-dollar company executives. When I stand in front of a safety audience, my message is simple: your breaths and heartbeats are automatic, but they are not guaranteed. Make sure you come home at the end of the day.
With gratitude and radical reverence for this incredible gift called life,
P.S. Remember — there's a helluva difference between just living and being fully alive. The choice is always yours.
